Information:
Caterpillar Diesel EnginesBecause of the type of information in this article, it is not written in Caterpillar Fundamental English (CFE).
The physical characteristics of some blended fuels and crude oils differ from the recommended fuels listed in all Lubrication and Maintenance Guides. However, because such fuels can and are being used (where economics justify or where limited fuel supplies necessitate), the current diesel fuel recommendations have been expanded to recognize these alternate fuels and to specify their use. Diesel fuels will now be listed as either preferred or permissible.
Preferred fuels are the current distillate fuels which have given maximum engine service life and performance. Permissible fuels are some crude oils and blended fuels which can be used by adding extra fuel filters and adjusting oil change intervals. When these fuels are used, reasonable engine service life can be obtained if the recommended service procedures are followed. However, before considering permissible fuels, include higher than normal maintenance costs when figuring overall economy. Fuel can represent 80% or more of the total engine operating costs.
The Engine Data Sheet, Form LEHX1362, and Special Instruction, Form SEHS7067, discuss and list fuels either by accepted standard designations or by fuel specification requirements. The updated charts in these publications give a cross reference of preferred and permissible fuels for different areas of the world.
All new and revised Lubrication and Maintenance Guides will reflect the changes made to the diesel fuel recommendations.
