PROBLEM
There have been some instances of water ingress into the flywheel housing on certain 311F Excavators. This can result in starting motor failure due to a short circuit.

ACTION REQUIRED
Before completing the Rework, review the safety actions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your machine.
If the Starting Motor has not failed:
Refer to Image 1 and 2.
Support the weight of the inspection plate (1) and remove bolts (2). Remove inspection plate (1). The weight of the inspection plate is approximately 1.5 kg (3.5 lb).
Place a suitable container below the flywheel housing drain plug (3). Remove the drain plug.
Ensure that the drain hole is clear and that fluid can drain. If necessary, allow any fluid to drain. Dispose of any fluid according to local regulations.
Install inspection plate (1) and install bolts (2). Tighten the bolts (2) to a torque of 100 N.m (73 lb ft).
If the Starting Motor has failed:
Refer to Image 1 and 2.
Support the weight of the inspection plate (1) and remove bolts (2). Remove inspection plate (1). The weight of the inspection plate is approximately 1.5 kg (3.5 lb).
Place a suitable container below the flywheel housing drain plug (3). Remove the drain plug.
Ensure that the drain hole is clear and that fluid can drain. If necessary, allow any fluid to drain. Dispose of any fluid according to local regulations.
Install inspection plate (1) and install bolts (2). Tighten the bolts (2) to a torque of 100 N.m (73 lb ft).
Replace the Starting Motor. Refer to KENR9855 "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install" for detailed instructions.
