Friction discs (12) are splined to housing (7) .When the pedal in the cab is pressed, pressure is transmitted through port (2) and into brake chamber (11). This moves piston (6) which causes friction discs (12) to contact outer plates (8). The outer plates are splined to wheel (9). Friction between the friction discs and the outer plates opposes the motion of the wheel.

(13) Spring (14) GuideWhen the pedal in the cab is released, pressure is relieved from brake chamber (11). Guide (14), which is attached to piston (6), is moved by spring (13). Piston (6) moves causing the friction discs and the outer plates to disengage. The wheel is allowed to rotate without an opposing force.Note: The spring is compressed when the service brake is engaged.The service brake is cooled by oil from the hoist system. Cooling oil flows through cooling port (3) into cooling chamber (10). This cooling oil flows between the friction discs and the outer plates. Grooves in the friction discs allow the cooling oil to flow when the service brake is engaged. The cooling oil flows from cooling port (1) to the hydraulic tank for the hoist system and the braking system.Test equipment can be installed into the hole for plug (5) in order to measure wear within the service brake.
