Engine Identification
Caterpillar engines are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate that are mounted on the engine.Caterpillar dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. This permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.Serial Number Plate

(1) Location of the Serial Number Plate The Serial Number Plate is on the left side of the cylinder block near the rear of the engine.The following information is stamped on the Serial Number Plate: engine serial number, model and arrangement number.Information Plate

(1) Location of the Information Plate The Information Plate is on the left side top surface of the cylinder block in front of the front cylinder head.The following information is stamped on the Information Plate: compression ratio, aftercooler temperature, power (kilowatts and horsepower), full load rpm and other information.
