Table 1
Machine Model     Deflection of the Bevel Gear Case
All Models
0.095 0.019 mm (0.0037 0.0007 inch)
If the deflection is less than the range in Table 1, bevel gear shaft (4) is too loose. Remove some shims (5) and tighten bolts (7) again to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 10 lb ft). Repeat Steps 8 through 12.If the deflection is more than the range in Table 1, the bevel gear shaft is too tight. Add some shims (5) and tighten bolts (7) again to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 10 lb ft). Repeat Steps 8 through 12.
Adjust the clearance between the bevel gear and the pinion (backlash) by moving the shims from one side to the other side in the bevel gear case. Refer to the adjustment procedure for the bevel gear and pinion in Specifications, "D7G Tractor Power Train" in your Service Manual.Note: If you move the shims from one side to the other side, the bearing preload will not change. You must keep the same amount of shims.Note: Whenever the bearing cage is loosened or removed, repeat Step 8. This step ensures that the bearings have been seated, and that the bearing preload is set correctly.
When all the procedures for the bevel gear and pinion are completed, install the remaining bolts and hardened washers in the cage. Torque the bolts to 135 15 N m (100 10 lb ft).Note: Previous models used lock washers. Replace all lock washers with 5P-8245 Hard Washers .Procedure (Small Bearings)

Install bearing cones (8) and (10) on bevel gear shaft (4). It will be necessary to heat the bearing cones to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F) with a bearing heater in order to install the bearing.
Install the bearing cups in the bearing cages.
Use an appropriate lifting device to install bevel gear shaft (4). The approximate weight of the shaft assembly is 21 kg (46 lb). Hand tighten nuts (9) .
Install bearing cage (6) with two packages of shims (5), but without two 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) shims. The thickness of a full shim pack (5) is 3.10 0.08 mm (0.122 0.003 inch). Install four bolts (7) with even spacing and with no washers. Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 10 lb ft).
Install bearing cage (1) with no shims (2). Install four bolts (11) with no washers in even spaces. Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 10 lb ft).
Tighten nuts (9) on bevel gear (3) to a torque of 215 40 N m (160 30 lb ft).
Rotate bevel gear shaft (4)
