Information:
Troubleshooting can be difficult. The following pages list some of the possible problems. Problem 1: Unable To Read Display Characters Probable Cause:1. Individual Display Segments Unlit If portions of the display will not light (part of a character is missing, etc.), the display must be replaced. Problem 2: Display Will Not Power-Up Probable Cause:1. Make sure key switch is in ON position.2. Loose or poor power and ground connections to the display.3. Vehicle battery dead.4. Software chip not inserted in display, or not fully seated in display. After checking the above items, if condition still exists refer to Step 1 of Diagnostic Test. Problem 3: No Data Link Communication Message Probable Cause:1. No or intermittent connection in one of the two ATA Data Link lines to the engine ECM.2. Connection to the SAE J1922 Data Link instead of ATA Data Link.3. No or intermittent power or ground connections to the engine ECM. After checking the above items, if condition still exists refer to Step 4 of Diagnostic Test. Problem 4: All Data Except Lifetime Totals Has Been Reset Probable Cause:1. Unswitched battery connection to engine ECM disconnected. Possibly due to vehicle service or a battery disconnect switch.2. Data purposely reset using the display, Caterpillar Fleet Information Software, or an electronic service tool. Determine the reason for the reset and avoid reoccurrence. If a different system problem is suspected, consult a qualified service shop. Problem 5: Fleet, Driver Trip Data, and Lifetime Totals Reset Probable Cause:1. Engine ECM recently replaced. Determine the reason for the reset and avoid reoccurrence. If a different system problem is suspected, consult a qualified service shop. Problem 6: Unable to Reset/Adjust Fleet Trip, Maintenance or Fuel Correction Probable Cause:1. Engine ECM Customer Programmable Parameters are programmed to prevent the reset of these parameters. An electronic service tool and owner permission will be necessary to reset the ECM and allow access to these functions from the display.2. Power to the display was turned OFF and then turned back ON for the display to recognize the change. Problem 7: Unable to Access Fleet Trip State Totals and State Crossing information Probable Cause:1. Engine ECM Customer Programmable Parameters are programmed OFF to prevent access to this information. An electronic service tool and owner permission will be necessary to reset the ECM and allow access to this information. The power must be cycled OFF and then ON to the display to recognize any changes in the ECM. Problem 8: Certain Instantaneous Data Parameters Appear to be Unavailable1. This information is not available on the data link. Make sure the appropriate sensors are installed. For example, if Ambient Air Temperature is not shown by the display, verify that an Ambient Air Sensor is installed on the vehicle. Problem 9: Display Does Not Dim When Connected to Vehicle Dimmer Circuit Probable Cause:1. Vehicle dimmer circuit is not a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) type circuit. Contact the vehicle manufacturer to determine if the vehicle has a PWM dimmer circuit.
