Introduction
Disconnect batteries before performance of any service work.
Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
This publication describes the proper method for installation of a cylinder head gasket. The cylinder head has already been removed. The old cylinder head gasket has already been removed. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual for your engine.Procedure for the Installation of a Cylinder Head Gasket
Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the cylinder block.

Install a new cylinder head gasket (1) and new O-ring seals (2) on the cylinder block. Inspect the condition of the remaining gaskets. Replace the gaskets, if necessary.Note: To avoid damage to the cylinder head gasket, use guide bolts of an appropriate size to install the cylinder head.
Use a suitable lifting device to install the cylinder head on the cylinder block.
Lubricate the following components with 6V-4876 Lubricant : the bolt threads, the underside of the bolt heads and the washers. Install the cylinder head bolts and the washers.

Note: There are currently two types of cylinder head bolts that are being used. The first type is a reduced shank design that is shown in Illustration 3. The second type is a full shank design that is shown in Illustration 4.Note: Engines that are equipped with a compression brake will have three head bolt studs. Install the head bolt studs in positions (2), (8), and (10). Tighten the head bolt studs in sequence with the cylinder head bolts.

Cylinder head bolt with reduced shank designDimension (A) for the reduced shank design is the following amount: 14.58 mm (0.574 inch)
Tighten the cylinder head bolts with the reduced shank design according to the following procedure:
Tighten bolt (1) through bolt (26) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 160
