Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. All disassembly and all assembly procedures must be performed on a clean work surface and in a clean hydraulic area. Keep cleaned parts covered and protected at all times.
Perform all necessary repairs to the hydraulic cylinder before assembly. Refer to Guideline for Reusable Parts and Salvage Operations, SEBF8072, "Inspection and Salvage of Hydraulic Cylinder Components" for information on reusability and salvage procedures.Note: Apply a light film of hydraulic oil to all components before assembly.
Lower the temperature of sleeve bearing (7) for the rod assembly to -40 °C (-40 °F).
Use Tooling (C) to install sleeve bearing (7) into the pin bore of the rod assembly.
Install the sleeve bearing until the sleeve bearing is centered in the bore of the rod assembly.
Use Tooling (C) to install two lip type seals (5) in the pin bore of the rod assembly.
Install the lip type seals so that the sealing lips are facing out and until the seals contact the bearing.
Lower the temperature of the sleeve bearing (8) for the cylinder assembly to -40 °C (-40 °F).
Use Tooling (C) to install sleeve bearing (8) into the pin bore of the cylinder assembly.
Install the sleeve bearing until the sleeve bearing is centered in the bore of the cylinder assembly.
Use Tooling (C) to install two lip type seals (6) in the pin bore of the cylinder assembly.
Install the lip type seals so that the sealing lips are facing out and until the seals contact the bearing.
Use Tooling (D) to thoroughly wash the inside of the boom cylinder. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0062, "Procedure for Using the 120-9143 Cylinder Wash Tank Group " for the correct cleaning procedures.
Install sleeve bearing (12) and ring (13) in head (11) .Note: Make sure that the grooves for the seals in head (11) are thoroughly clean prior to assembly.
Install seal (28), seal (10) and ring (27) in head (11), as shown.
Apply 4C-4032 Bearing Mount Compound to the groove for the wiper seal prior to assembly.
Use Tooling (C) to install lip seal (9) in head (11) .
Install lip seal (9) with the sealing lip toward the outside of the cylinder.
Install O-ring seal (15) and ring (14) in head (11), as shown.
Apply clean hydraulic oil on the
