Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Selection of the oil change interval
Your machine may be able to use an extended interval for the transmission oil. The standard change interval is listed in theOperation Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule". The oil should be monitored during intervals of 500 hours. The extended interval can be used if the following criteria are met.SATO
Cat SATO oil is the preferred oil for use in Cat medium loader transmission systems when ambient temperature is between -20C (-4F) and 35C (95F). CatSATO has an SAE viscosity grade of 10W-30. Cat SATO has a 100% increase in the standard oil drain interval (up to 2000 hours) for machine transmission systems over second and third choice oils (up to 1000 hours) when you follow the maintenance interval schedule for oil filter changes and for oil sampling that is stated in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. When you switch to Cat SATO, cross contamination with the previous oil should be kept to less than 10%.Note: If using second or third choice TDTO oils, the recommended transmission oil change interval is 1000 hours. If using Cat SATO oil the recommended transmission oil change interval is 2000 hours. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual , "Transmission Oil - Change".Oil Filters
Cat oil filters are recommended. The interval for changing the oil filter is listed in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule"Note: A warning for the transmission filter bypass will be shown on the graphical display if the transmission oil filter needs to be replaced prior to the service interval.
Operate the engine in order to warm the transmission oil. Park the machine on level ground. Lower the bucket and apply slight downward pressure.
Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.

Remove drain plug (1) on the bottom of the transfer case.
Change the transmission oil filter.Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Oil Filter - Replace" for the correct procedure.

The magnetic strainer is on the right rear side of the transfer case. Remove the four bolts, the cover, and the seal that holds the magnets and the screen in place.
Remove the screen and the magnets from the transfer case housing.
Wash the screen in a clean, nonflammable solvent. Use a bristle brush or pressure air to clean the screen. Clean the magnets. Replace any damaged magnets.
Clean the cover. Inspect the cover seal. Replace the cover seal if the seal is damaged.
Insert the magnets and the screen into the transfer case housing. Install the seal, the cover, and the four bolts.
Clean the transmission oil drain plug and install the transmission oil drain plug.
