Bearing Adjustment for the Bevel Gear Shaft
1. Install bevel gear shaft (4) without the bevel gear (1) if the transmission is in the machine or with the bevel gear if the transmission is out of the machine.2. Install bearing cage (3) with a full package of shims (8). Tighten bolts (6) evenly.3. Install bearing cage (5) without shims (10).4. Tighten bolts (7) evenly while slowly turning the bevel gear shaft until the torque needed to turn the bevel gear shaft is ... 80 to 100 lb. in.(9.1 to 11.3 N m)5. Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between the flange of bearing cage (5) and the face of the bevel gear case. Make the measurement at each of the bolts around the bearing cage. Make sure the measured distance is the same at each bolt.6. Remove bearing cage (5) and install an amount of shims (10) the same thickness as the distance measured in Step 5. Install the bearing cage and tighten bolts (7) evenly. Torque bolts (6) and (7) to ... 100 10 lb. ft.(135 14 N m)7. Check the torque needed to turn the shaft again to make sure it is ... 80 to 100 lb. in.(9.1 to 11.3 N m)Free Movement (Backlash) Adjustment
Check the movement of the bevel pinion. The correct movement forward and back is ... .023 .008 in.(0.58 0.20 mm)1. Install the transmission or bevel gear (1).2. Install a dial indicator on one tooth of bevel pinion (2).3. Put a block of wood against bevel gear (1) to prevent it from turning.4. Push the bevel pinion toward the front of the machine as far as it will go and move the bevel pinion from side to side. The free movement (backlash) will be the difference in values read on the dial indicator.5. Check the free movement (backlash) at four places around the bevel gear (1) to find the point of smallest free movement. Be sure the bevel pinion is held forward while moving the bevel pinion when measuring the backlash.6. The correct free movement (backlash) is ... .015 +.005 or -.004 in.(0.38 +0.13 or -0.10 mm)7. If the smallest amount of backlash is too large, remove some of shims (8) from behind bearing cage (3). Install the shims (that were removed) behind bearing cage (5).8. If the smallest amount of backlash is too small, move some of shims (10) from bearing cage (5) to bearing cage (3). The bearing preload for the bevel gear shaft will not change by moving shims from one side to the other if the total thickness of the shims does not change.(9) Torque for bolts ... 265 35 lb. ft.(360 45 N m)
