flush the engine cooling system and the radiator. Ensure that the correct solution of water, antifreeze, and cooling system conditioner is used in the system.Measure the temperature of the top tank of the radiator and the bottom tank of the radiator with an infrared thermometer. The temperature differential across the radiator must typically be in the range of 7 to 8° C (12 to 15 ° F). If the temperature differential is greater than this specification, the coolant flow through the radiator is not adequate. There is probably a restriction in the cooling system circuit. If the temperature differential is less than this specification, the coolant flow through the radiator is too great. Perform the necessary repairs in order to correct these problems.Check the fins of the radiator core for debris or for damage. Debris and damage to the fins of the radiator core will restrict air flow through the radiator core. An overheating problem can develop. Perform the necessary repairs.Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Cooling System - Inspect".
Radiator Hoses and Clamps Check the hoses and clamps for the cooling system. Damaged hoses with leaks can normally be seen during a visual inspection. Hoses that have no visual leaks can soften during operation. The soft areas of the hose can become kinked or crushed during operation. These areas of the hose can cause a restriction in the coolant flow. Hoses can become soft. Hoses can become cracked and brittle. The inside of a hose can deteriorate and the loose particles of the hose can cause a restriction of the coolant flow. A loose hose clamp can allow air into the cooling system during the cooldown period. Ensure that the hose clamps are in good repair and ensure that the hose clamps are correctly torqued.Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hoses and Clamps - Inspect/Replace".
Radiator Baffles Check for missing radiator baffles or for damaged radiator baffles. Radiator baffles prevent recirculation of air around the sides of the radiator. A missing radiator baffle or a damaged radiator baffle can raise the temperature of the air that goes through the radiator.
Radiator Size Ensure that the radiator has been sized according to the OEM specifications. An undersized radiator does not have enough area for the effective dissipation of heat. The engine may run at a temperature that is higher than normal. The normal temperature is dependent on the ambient temperature.
Water Pump, Temperature Regulator, and Pressure Cap
Water Pump Pressure Check Check the pressures at the inlet and the outlet of the water pump.A high-pressure differential across the water pump may indicate that there is an excessive restriction in the cooling system. The restriction could be caused by the buildup of scale in the engine block or in the radiator. Check the system for an excessive restriction. Perform the necessary repairs.A low-pressure differential across the water pump may indicate that the pump is not operating efficiently. Remove the water pump from the engine in order to inspect the condition of the impellers and the
