Wheel Loader 980G (2KR, 2SR, 9CM)
980G II (AWH, AXG)
988G (2TW, BNH)
Component Code: 7620SUBJECT: Error in 213-8799 Monitor Software (Payload Control System)
PROBLEM: An error has been found in Payload Control System (PCS) software version 2.07AR (213-8799 Monitor Software (Payload Control System)). This error can be found in new PCS control boxes that were built for the 980G after October 21, 2001.
PCS software version 2.07AR was released to eliminate the logging of position sensor faults that occurred when the machine went through shut down. Due to an unrelated error, PCS software version 2.07AR requires the user to perform an additional step of calibrating the rod end sensor during the calibration of the PCS. While this step is usually not difficult, the system can get stuck in a repeating cycle if the PCS does not see enough difference between one lift and another.
The following machines are at risk:
980G?s that were built after October 21, 2001
980G?s that upgraded to 2.07AR from much older versions of PCS software (2.06R or 2.05R)
Upgrading from 2.07R to 2.07AR would not cause the machine to request this calibration step.
PCS modules that contain the new software will have the 213-8800 part number stamped on the top of the PCS module. The PCS software version is also displayed when the PCS module is powered-up.
Note: A limited number of the PCS modules that contain the new software (and have the 213-8800 number stamped on top of the module) may have made it into the parts distribution system. Check to ensure that none of the effected PCS modules are present in dealer stock. If one of the effected PCS modules is found in dealer stock, call Caterpillar Electronics Help Desk at (309) 578-6529.
SOLUTION: Currently, Caterpillar is reverting to the previous version of PCS software (2.07R p/n: 165-4078). This version of software (2.07R) will be used until a new corrected version of PCS software can be released.
To correct the problem, perform the following steps:
1. Download the following two PCS flash files (currently available on SIS Web):
PCS software version 2.06R "1556065.FLS"
PCS software version 2.07R "1654078.FLS"
2. Flash PCS software version 2.06R into the PCS module.
3. Flash PCS software version 2.07R into the PCS module.
Note: Re-flashing the PCS module will require a new calibration. After flashing the software, allow extra time to recalibrate the machine.
If you are not being required to perform a rod end calibration or if you are currently using 2.07AR and are not experiencing problems, no activity is required at this time.
