Challenger 75C (4KK),
Challenger 85C (9TK) TractorsDescription of Change: The durability of electronic unit fuel injectors in 3176 Engines in Challenger Tractors was unsatisfactory in some cases. Abrasive wear of the spill valve, barrel and plunger of the injectors was occurring. Customer maintenance practices were found to be deficient in some cases, but test work showed that an improved filter media could substantially improve the life of the of electronic unit fuel injectors. Adaptable To: The 1R-0712 Fuel Filter Assembly, part of the 7C-1760 Filter Group, has been superseded by the 1R-0749 Fuel Filter Assembly on 3176 engines used in Challenger 75C and Challenger 85C Tractors. This change is effective on Challenger 75C (4KK590) and on Challenger 85C (9TK290) Tractors. The 1R-0749 Fuel Filter Assembly directly replaces the 1R-0712 and 1P-2299 Fuel Filter Assemblies on all 3176 Engines in Challenger Tractors.
The change interval for the new 1R-0749 Fuel Filter Assembly is the same 250 hours as has been published previously. It is the only filter recommended for the 3176 Engine in Challenger Tractors.
Customers should be reminded of the following good fuel handling practices:
1. Never pre fill new filters before installation. This introduces dirty fuel into the clean side of the system. Install the filter dry and pressurize it with the hand priming pump. In most cases, the engine can be started without priming the filter.2. Periodically drain moisture and debris from the bottom of the sump tank (if present) or from the sump portion of the fuel tank on the C Series Tractors. The drain interval can be determined by catching the first fuel drained in a clear container and letting it settle. If a considerable amount of moisture or foreign material is present, then the drain interval is too long.3. Be sure that the fuel delivery system is kept clean through proper maintenance of each step of the fuel handling process. Bulk tanks and delivery tanks are often neglected as sources of contaminated fuel through lack of drainage of foreign material and water.4. The process of refueling often introduces dirt into the tank because the area around the fuel cap has not been cleaned, or the fueling nozzle is dirty. The booklet "Diesel Fuels And Your Engine", SEBD0717, is an excellent reference on fuels and their handling.
