Start By:
Remove the power train guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Power Train Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install".
Remove the axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use Tooling (A) in order to chock the front wheels.

Use Tooling (B) in order to raise the tires off the ground.

Release the parking brakes.
Remove pin (4) from slack adjuster (1) .
Loosen bolt (3). Rotate bolt (2) in order to move slack adjuster (1) downward.

Attach a suitable lifting device to axle (5). The weight of axle shaft (5) is approximately 70 kg (155 lb). Position axle shaft (5) in planetary carrier (6), as shown. Note: Axle shaft (5) will be used for balance.

Install Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device onto planetary carrier (6). The weight of planetary carrier (6) and axle shaft (5) is approximately 433 kg (955 lb).
Remove bolts (7) .
Use Tooling (D) in order to remove planetary carrier (6) and axle shaft (5) .

Position planetary carrier (6) and axle shaft (5) on Tooling (F), as shown.
Use Tooling (E) to remove planetary carrier (6) from axle shaft (5). The weight of planetary carrier (6) is approximately 363 kg (800 lb).

Remove O-ring seal (8) .

Install Tooling (G) in order to secure the wheel in position during the removal of the hub.

Install Tooling (C), Tooling (H), and a suitable lifting device to ring gear and hub (12). The weight of ring gear and hub (12) is approximately 172 kg (380 lb).
Remove bolts (9), retainer (10), and shim pack (11) (not shown).
Remove ring gear and hub (12) .
