Assemble valve group (X).
Install O-ring (30), spring (31), valve (32), and O-rings (33).
Assemble valve (28).
Illustration 22 g00625332Note: Lubricate the valve bores with a light coat of oil prior to installing the valves.
Install valves (29). Tighten valves (29) to a torque of 90 5 N m (65 4 lb ft). Install valves (28). Tighten valves (28) to a torque of 102 7 N m (76 5 lb ft).

Install O-ring seals (9) and (11). Check the condition of lip seal (10). Install lip seal (10).Note: Put a light coat of oil on the O-rings and the lip seal.
Install shim (12) into the pump housing. Apply grease to the shim in order to hold the shim in position.

Use a suitable wrench to rotate the shaft.
Install retainer (8) and four bolts (7).
Install an eyebolt into the end of the shaft. Install a dial indicator to the end of the shaft. Check the end play of the shaft by pulling on the eyebolt. The correct end play is 0.05 to .20 mm (0.002 to .007 inch). Install shims under retainer (8) in order to achieve the desired end play.Note: The spring in the barrel provides 2670 N (600 lb) of load. Put a prybar through the eyebolt in order to overcome the load on the spring.

Install bushing (27).
Install shaft (26). Install key (25) onto shaft (26).
Install O-ring (24) onto the pump housing. Install gears (22) and (23) onto shaft (26). Make sure that the reference marks on gears (22) and (23) are visible. Use Tooling (G) to install retaining ring (21).

Install O-ring seal (20) onto bolt (15). Install bolt (15), spring (19), and spacer (18).

Install pump (17) and three bolts (16).
Tighten bolt (15).

Install coupling (14) and three bolts (13).

Install seals (6) onto gear (5).

Install gear (5) onto the shaft.
Install belleville spring (2) and spacer (3) onto the shaft.Note: The concave surface of belleville spring (2) must be placed against the gear.
Use Tooling (A) to compress belleville spring (2). Use Tooling (F) to install retaining ring (4).End By:
Install the steering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Pump - Install".
