When the machine is turning, the differential allows the inside wheel to turn at a slower rate than the outside wheel. The differential still sends the same amount of torque to each wheel.Bevel pinion (17) is connected to the yoke. The yoke assembly is connected to a universal joint from the output transfer gears. The bevel pinion is connected to the yoke assembly by splines. The bevel pinion is engaged with ring gear (5). The ring gear is fastened to the differential group. The differential carrier (1) is fastened to the axle housing.The differential group has a case (15). Ring gear (5) is fastened to differential case (15). Side gear (11) Spider (16) is installed between the two cases. When the differential cases are turned, the spider turns. Pinions (9) are installed on the spider. The pinions are engaged with the teeth of side gears (7) and (11). The axle shafts are connected to the side gears by splines. The side gears turn against thrust washers (6) and (10). The pinions turn on bearings (8) .Nut (18) is used to make adjustments to the end play (bearing preload) of bearings (19) and (21) for bevel pinion (17) .Shims (22) are used to adjust the tooth contact (wear pattern) between bevel pinion (17) and ring gear (5) .Adjustment rings (3) and (12) are used to adjust the free movement (backlash) between bevel pinion (17) and ring gear (5). The adjustment rings are also used to adjust the bearing preload of bearings (23) and (13) .The inside components of the differential receives lubrication from the oil inside the differential. The flat surfaces on spider (16) allow oil flow to bearings (8). The supply for lubrication oil is a reservoir in the axle housing.Straight FORWARD or REVERSEWhen the machine moves in a straight direction with the same amount of traction under each drive wheel, the same amount of torque on each axle holds the pinions so spider (16) does not turn.Bevel pinion (17) turns ring gear (5). The ring gear turns differential cases (4) and (15). The differential cases turn spider (16). The spider turns side gears (7) and (11) through pinions (9). The pinions do not turn the spider.
