EXCAVATOR,
Information:
(1) Torque for 16 bolts ... 475 60 N m (350 45 lb ft)(2) Torque for 12 bolts ... 265 25 N m (200 18 lb ft)(3) Torque for 12 bolts ... 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft)(4) Torque for 24 bolts ... 130 30 N m (95 22 lb ft) Tighten bolt an additional ... 120 10°(5) Torque for four bolts ... 1150 150 N m (850 110 lb ft)(15) Coat seal bore with 6V6640 Gasket Maker before installing seal. Adjustment Procedures
1. Install pinion (8) in housing (9) complete with bearings.2. Install washer (10) and nut (11). Do not install seal (15).3. While pinion (8) is slowly turned, tighten nut (11) to obtain a rolling torque of 1.12 to 3.15 N m (10 to 28 lb in).4. If the torque exceeds the specification, backoff one eighth of a turn, reseat the bearings, and perform step 2 again. Check assembly for zero endplay. Reduce preload torque 0.6 N m (5.31 lb in) for used bearings with more than 100 hours of operation.5. When the torque nedded to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (11) by peening the collar into the slot in the pinion shaft. See illustration A for the correct tooling and dimensions.
Illustration A6. Install pinion subassembly in carrier assembly (14) with 80 percent of shim pack (7) and bevel gear group in carrier assembly with the axle centerline in the vertical position and the teeth of ring gear (12) toward the top.7. Tighten one of the two bolts in each bearing cap to a torque of 70 N m (50 lb ft). Tighten the other two bolts to a torque of 5 N m (4 lb ft).8. Move adjusting nuts (6) and (13) to a position that maintains gear backlash, but not tight gear mesh and a slight bearing endplay.9. Measure the torque required to rotate pinion (8) and record the measured torque.10. Move adjusting nut (13), while rotating bevel gear (12) to zero backlash position. Move adjusting Nut (13) back to the nearest lock position.11. Move adjusting nut (6) until the torque to rotate pinion (8) is increased 0.6 to 1.1 N m (5.3 to 9.7 lb in) more than the torque found in step 9. This is the seated position.12. Tighten adjusting nut (6) three lugs to the nearest lock position.13. Measure the backlash between ring gear (12) and pinion (8). The backlash must be 0.36 0.13 mm (.014 .005 in).14. If the backlash does not meet specification, retract one nut the same amount the opposite nut is advanced to keep the bearing preload.15. Tighten bearing cap bolts (5) to 1150 150 N m (850 110 lb ft).16. Measure overall rolling torque at pinion (8). Rolling torque should be 2.81 to 10.78 N m (25 to 95 lb in). The differential preload will be kept only if one adjustment ring
