Adaptable To: The new 6I-2861 Piston and Rod Group replace the former 8N-6226 Piston and Rod Group effective with the engine serial numbers listed in the chart.--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Reference: Engine News, October 1997, Page 2, "Improved Piston Crown Assembly Used In The Rod And Piston Group". Reference: Engine News, October 1994, Page 10, "New 106-7408 Engine Oil Film (Decal) Available".Description of Change: A different piston and rod group is used in the Phase I engine arrangements for 3500 High Speed Marine, Marine Auxiliary, and Generator Set applications. This new piston and rod group includes a two piece piston. A one piece aluminum piston was used in the former piston and rod group. The new piston and rod group requires the use of a new piston cooling spray jet and retainer. An additional crankcase breather is also required. For years Caterpillar has recommended the use of CF-4 oil in 3500 engines (see the October 1994 Reference Article). The two piece pistons in these engines REQUIRE the use of a multigrade CF-4 oil or better to prevent top ring land packing and the resultant early liner wear.
Adaptable To: The new 6I-2361 Piston and Rod Group replace the former 8N-6226 Piston and Rod Groups effective with the engine serial numbers listed in the chart. The new 116-3253 Tube Assembly (piston cooling spray jet) and 7C-3722 Retainer Assembly and crankcase breather are in effect with the same engine serial numbers listed.
Do NOT mix single piece pistons and two piece pistons in the same engine. Do not put 3500 pistons into 3500B Engines, or 3500B pistons into 3500 Engines. Serious piston and engine damage will occur.
