Installation Procedure
The floating ring seals have highly finished surfaces. The floating ring seals are held together by toric sealing rings. The flexibility of the toric sealing rings allows the floating ring seals to be self-aligning. The flexibility of the toric sealing rings compensates for any wear on the metal faces.
During the disassembly, be certain that the floating ring seals are kept in matched sets. The floating ring seals must be installed in pairs. Do not install a used floating ring seal and a new floating ring seal. Do not reinstall a used toric sealing ring.
Be careful not to damage any critical areas on the parts. Any parts beside the sealing faces should be filed smooth if there are nicks.
Wash all the dirt off the used parts. A wire brush may be needed to clean the dirt and rust from the bore of the seal retainers.

Remove the oil or the protective coating from floating ring seals (2) and from retainers (4). Use a nonflammable cleaning solvent to remove the oil or the protective coating. Dry the floating ring seals and the retainers.
Be certain that the ramps on the retainers and the ramps on the floating ring seals are dry and free of oil. Check the ramps for any marks or nicks. Use a scraper or a wire brush to remove all the dirt and rust from the used parts. Use an emery cloth to smooth the surfaces of the used parts.
Install new rubber toric sealing rings (1) on floating ring seals (2). Do not install a used toric sealing ring.
Install toric sealing rings (1) on floating ring seals (2). Be certain that the toric sealing ring is not twisted. The toric sealing ring must sit straight against the lip of the floating ring seal. The lip of the floating ring seal keeps the toric sealing ring from falling.
Avoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid breathing the vapors in enclosed areas without adequate ventilation and do not smoke.Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flame, welding operations, or around heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F).
Before installation of the Duo-Cone floating seals, wet the toric sealing ring with isopropyl alcohol to help the toric sealing ring slip easily under the housing retainer lip. Do not use any liquid that leaves an oil film. Do not use any liquid that does not evaporate quickly.

Use the correct tools to install Duo-Cone floating seals. The installation tools for the Duo-Cone floating seals are available for different-sized seals. Refer to the power train section of Special Publication, PERJ1017 for the correct installation tools. A typical installation tool is shown in Illustration 2.Note: Do not use a screwdriver to assemble the toric sealing ring and the retainer. Use finger pressure to install the toric sealing ring.
Install the Duo-Cone floating seal in retainer (4) until the toric sealing ring is under the lip of the retainer. Be certain that the toric sealing ring does not twist during the installation which can cause floating
