Perform the following procedure to inspect the alternator to ensure that the cap is installed.
If the cap is present:
Turn the cap counter clockwise to loosen.
Turn clockwise until there is slight resistance from the internal rubber seal.
Rotate an extra 90 to 180 degrees.
If the cap is found to be missing:
The suitable service replacement cap is available under Cat part number 524-1843 Protection Cap As. If 524-1843 Protection Cap As is not available, the optional replacement is 3E-5165 Protection Cap As.
Use the same tightening procedure for tightening the original equipment cap.Note: The optional 3E-5165 Protection Cap As includes a retention chain that is not needed, the chain can be left hanging from the cap or removed and discarded.
