Personal injury or death can result from a fire.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Do not fill fuel filter with fuel before installing the fuel filter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The fuel priming pump is in a compartment on the left side of the machine.

Open the access door.
Turn the priming pump plunger counterclockwise and pull out the priming pump plunger.
Operate the fuel priming pump in order to fill the new filter element. Continue to operate the fuel priming pump until the pump resists operation. This indicates that the filter element is full of fuel.
Start the engine. Look for leaks around the filter element. If the engine will not start or the engine misfires, more priming is necessary.
Push the priming pump plunger inward and turn the priming pump plunger clockwise in order to lock the priming pump plunger. Remove the plug (1) from the side of the fuel filter base. Release the priming pump plunger and prime the fuel system until a continuous stream of fuel is flowing from the opening. Catch the fuel in a suitable container. Replace the plug (1) .
If the engine runs rough after start-up, shut off the engine. Loosen the vent plug on the block for the fuel return. The block for the fuel return is at the upper left rear of the engine. Release the priming pump plunger and prime the fuel system until a continuous stream of fuel is flowing from the opening. Catch the fuel in a suitable container. Install the vent plug and lock the priming pump plunger. Start the engine and run the engine at low idle until the engine does not run rough.
Close the access door.If the engine does not start, air is trapped in the fuel lines to the engine.

Loosen all fuel injection lines at the cylinder head of the engine.

Move the governor lever to the LOW IDLE position.

Turn the key start switch to START. Crank the engine until fuel flows free of air bubbles.
Move the governor lever all the way forward.
Turn the key to OFF and remove the key.
Tighten the nuts for the fuel lines. Use the following torque for the nuts: 40 7 N m (30 5 lb ft)
Remove any fuel that gets on the engine.
Close the cover assembly door.
