2. Misfiring Or Running Rough
Cause: Fuel pressure is low. Correction: Make sure there is fuel in the fuel tank. Look for leaks or crimped fuel lines. Prime the fuel system and look for air in the system. Cause: Air in fuel system. Correction: Find the air leak in the fuel system and correct it. Prime the fuel system.3. Low Power
Cause: Dirty air filter element. Correction: Replace air filter element. Cause: Dirty fuel filter element. Correction: Replace fuel filter element. Cause: Bad quality fuel. Correction: Remove bad fuel from the tank and put a good grade of clean fuel in the fuel tank. Install new fuel filter element. See the topic to fuel Specifications in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Cause: Fuel pressure is low. Correction: Make sure there is fuel in the fuel tank. Look for leaks or crimped fuel lines. Prime the fuel system and look for air in the system. Cause: Governor linkage. Correction: With engine running, pull the governor control lever into the high idle detent position. Push the lever on the governor housing, on the engine, to see if additional engine speed is available. Cause: Transmission oil level either too low or too high. Correction: Check oil level with engine running. Maintain oil at proper level. Cause: Partially plugged transmission oil filter, incorrect oil viscosity and/or cold. Correction: If the filter is clogged, changing it should shorten the time required for warmup. In extremely cold conditions, time must be allowed to warm the oil before the machine moves at full speed. See the topic Lubricant Viscosities chart in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Cause: Tracks adjusted too tight. Correction: Tracks should visually sag between top carrier roller and idler or sprocket. For proper adjustment procedure, see the topic Tracks in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Cause: Implement hydraulics engaged. Correction: Check to make sure that attachment control levers are being returned to HOLD. Cause: Engine not reaching full speed. Correction: Check fuel level and fuel filters. Bleed the fuel system if the engine misfires. Cause: Problem inside the transmission. Correction: After checking all of the above, contact your Caterpillar dealer for diagnosis and possible repairs.4. Excessive Oil Consumption
Cause: Too much lubrication oil in engine. Correction: Find where extra oil comes from. Remove extra oil. Make repairs as needed. Fill engine with oil to the FULL mark on the dipstick. Check correct oil level while engine is running. Do not overfill. Cause: Oil leaks. Correction: Find all oil leaks. Make repairs as needed. Check for dirty oil breather.5. Low Oil Pressure
Cause: Dirty oil filter. Correction: Install new filter element if needed. Remove dirty oil from engine. Put clean oil in engine. Cause: Fuel in lubrication oil. Correction: Locate the area where fuel gets into the lubrication oil. Make repairs as needed. Drain the lubrication oil. Install a new oil filter element. Fill the engine crankcase with clean oil. Cause: Defect in oil pressure gauge. Correction: Install new gauge.6. Cooling System Overheats
