Ether Cylinder Indicator(s)
The 776B, 777B and the 785 tractors and trucks have two indicator lights. The 789 truck has four indicators. Ether Cylinder Empty Indicator(s) - When these indicator(s) come on, they indicate the ether cylinder(s) are empty. Change the empty ether cylinder(s) before starting the engine.Ether Starting Aid
Inject ether ONLY while cranking the engine, or to clear white smoke after start up. Use the ether sparingly. Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage.
Ether Starting Aid Switch - The ether starting aid switch controls the use of the ether starting aid. The switch positions are defined as follows. Five factors determine how much and at what time ether is injected. They are the size of the engine, the temperature of the engine coolant, the (rpm) of the engine, the position of the key switch and the position of the ether switch. OFF (1) - The ether starting aid system will not activate with the switch in this position. Auto (2) - In this position, the ether starting aid system will automatically inject a metered amount of ether into the system upon cranking of the engine. This will happen if the engine coolant is less than or equal to +10°C (+50°F), the engine (rpm) is greater than 30 rpm and less than 2000 rpm. Manual (3) - With the switch (spring loaded) in this position, additional ether can be supplied (as long as switch is held) to warm up all cylinders and to clear white smoke after engine start up.Manual injections can only be made when the coolant temperature is less than +65°C (+150°F) and the engine speed is between 30 and 2000 rpm. The ether injection control limits the manual injection time to a maximum of seven minutes.Test Operation
After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for the starting motor to cool before cranking again.Never turn the disconnect switch off while the engine is running. Serious damage to the electrical system can result.
Ether Test/Disable Switch- Move the ether switch to the TEST/DISABLE position.The warning alarm will come on for two seconds and the empty ether cylinder indicator lights will remain on until the switch is moved to the AUTO position.This signals the operator that the system is functioning. Return the switch to AUTO. If warning light (1) is flashing during operation, ether cylinder one is empty and needs to be replaced. If warning light (2) is flashing, replace that cylinder.Warning Operation
Noncritical Fault
When a noncritical fault is present, both empty cylinder lights (1) and (2) will activate and flash out of synchronization with each other.The system will continue to operate during a noncritical fault. Have
