Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Put thrust washer (1) in position on the dowels in the front housing. The thickness of the new thrust washer is 0.945 0.05 mm (0.0372 0.0020 inch).

Typical Example
Note: The idler bearing in the illustration shows a groove for an internal oil supply. The new idler bearings do not have a groove for an internal oil supply.
If bearing (2) was removed, use Tooling (A) in order to install the bearing in gear (3). Install the bearing until dimension (X) is 2.5 0.5 mm (0.098 0.020 inch). The inside diameter of the bearing should be 69.987 0.040 mm (2.7554 0.0016 inch) after installation.

Install O-ring seals (5) on shaft (4). Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals.
Illustration 4 g00561506Note: The idler gears on each side are different. The gears must be installed on the correct side in order to get the correct engagement with the crankshaft gear.
Put clean engine oil on the bearing in gear (3).
Put gear (3) in position with the large shoulder of the gear in the front. Install shaft (4).
Install bolts (6) that hold shaft (4) in place.

Use Tooling (B) in order to check the backlash between the crankshaft gear and idler gear (3). The backlash should be 0.051 to 0.533 mm (0.0020 to 0.0209 inch).
Use Tooling (B) in order to check the end play of gear (3). The end play should be 0.25 to 0.85 mm (0.010 to 0.033 inch). End By:
Install the oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
Install the water pumps. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Install".
