The above listed 3034 Industrial Engines are equipped with a Turbocharger. If a turbocharger has visible signs of leaking oil, be aware of other components on the engine, and the operating conditions of the machine. The operating conditions may be contributing to the problem.These engines are equipped with a closed breather system that routes fumes from the breather back into the intake manifold. The fumes from the breather can carry a small amount of oil mist which may be deposited to the inside of the inlet piping, to the inside of the turbocharger compressor housing, or to the inside of the inlet manifold. These deposits of oil may be detected as an oil leak from the turbocharger. If an oil leak from the turbocharger is suspected, remove the inlet and exhaust piping, and check the end play on the turbocharger shaft. Look for evidence of rubbing between either of the compressor and turbine wheels and the housings. If the wheels are not rubbing and the end play is tight, do not change the turbocharger. The most likely main contributor to the oil leak is the closed breather system. Oil vapor that would enter the turbocharger from the closed breather system in small amounts is not harmful to the turbocharger. However, oil leaks from the hoses and gaskets in the inlet manifold may need to be addresses by using a small amount of RTV sealant with new gaskets and hoses.These factors may contribute to possible oil leaks at the turbocharger:
Operating the engine on a slope
Plugged air filters will cause excessive inlet air restriction.Note: These engines are approved for continuous running on slopes up to 25 degrees and intermittent running on slopes up to 35 degrees. Exceeding these limits may allow engine oil to be pulled past the seals of the turbocharger compressor housing and flow directly into the intake manifold. Simply changing the air filter elements may relieve a suspected oil leak of the turbocharger. In some cases, the turbocharger may actually need to be changed. When a turbocharger is changed, make sure that the engine oil is changed so the bearings in the new turbocharger are not exposed to dirty oil.
