Schematic of the Right Material Height Sonic Sensor of the Implement ECMThis diagnostic code is associated with the Right Material Height Sonic Sensor. The FMI 08 means that the ECM has determined that the signal frequency or the signal pulse width is not within the expected range. The sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 hz. The sensor has an operating duty cycle of 5% to 95%. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The sensor has failed.
Intermittent connections or poor connections
Mechanical devices are loose.
The ECM has failed. This situation is unlikely.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0991 FMI 08 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use a digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure. System Response:When this diagnostic code is active, the following occurs:
Right material feed automatic mode disabled.
Operator station fault lamp is active.Test Step 1. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSOR.
Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a multimeter probe along contact A (wire 119-PK) for the voltage supply.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage from contact A (wire 119-PK) to contact B (wire 201-BK).Expected Result:The voltage is battery voltage. Results:
OK - The voltage is battery voltage. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is not battery voltage. The circuit is open. Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SENSOR.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, remove the multimeter probe from contact A and insert the probe along the signal wire F734A-YL (contact C).
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the multimeter probe along the ground wire 201-BK (contact B).
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Do not disconnect the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor from the machine. Locate a solid, flat surface object of minimum 200 mm (7.9 inches) square. Hold the object, flat side facing the sensor at a distance of approximately 400 mm (15.8 inches).
Monitor the PWM signal of the sensor with a digital multimeter.
Move the object slowly towards the sensor.Expected Result:The PWM signal from the sensor decreases from approximately 95% as the object is moved closer to the face of the sensor. Results:
OK - The signal from the sensor responds correctly. The sensor is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The signal from the sensor does not respond correctly. The sensor is NOT operating correctly.Repair: Replace the sensor.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT AT THE ECM.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
