Cat Data Link circuitThis diagnostic code is recorded when the brake ECM detects an abnormal update rate from the engine ECM. System Response:
Events logged against an ECM that cannot be explained
Brake ECM cannot communicate with the engine ECM
Engine ECM appears to communicate intermittentlyTest Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
Verify that the part numbers of the following are correct:
Brake ECM software
Brake ECM
Engine ECM software
Engine ECM Note: Consult the product business unit for the correct part numbers.Expected Result:All the part numbers are correct.Results:
OK - All the part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - All the part numbers are not correct. Repair: Replace the incorrect ECM with an ECM that has the correct part number. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". Flash the correct configuration software. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".STOPTest Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Inspect the Cat Data Link harness for the following:
Inspect the connectors, pins, and sockets for the following:
Cleanliness
Security
Proper mating
Seal condition
Moisture
Corrosion
Inspect the wires at the connector for the following:
Security
Nicks
AbrasionNote: Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.
Inspect the harness for the following:
Damage
Abrasion
KinksExpected Result:The harness is in good condition.Results:
OK - The harness is in good condition. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The harness is not in good condition.Repair: Repair or replace the harness. STOPTest Step 3. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND The switches remain off.
Disconnect all ECMs from the Cat Data Link.
At the brake ECM harness, measure the resistance between frame ground and connector contacts J1-10 (wire 893-GN) and J1-20 (wire 892-BR) of the Cat Data Link circuit. Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between frame ground and the Cat Data Link circuit.Repair: Repair or replace the harness. STOPTest Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORT TO +BATTERY The switches remain off. All related ECMs remain disconnected from the harness.
At the brake ECM harness connector, measure the resistance between all sources of +battery and the following:
Connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN)
Connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR) Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 5.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between +battery and the Cat Data Link circuit.Repair: Repair or replace the harness. STOPTest Step 5. CHECK FOR AN OPEN The switches remain off. All related ECMs remain disconnected from the harness.
Measure the resistance between:
Brake ECM connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) and engine ECM connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN)
Brake ECM connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR) and engine ECM connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR) Expected Result:The resistance is less
