Required Tools
Tool Part Number Part Description Qty
A 448-5087 Barring Tool (1) 1
(1) The 9S-9082 Engine Turning Tool is alternate tooling.Start By:a. Remove the piston cooling jets.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Use Tooling (A) to turn the flywheel to access the connecting rod cap that will be removed.
Illustration 1 g01064418Note: Inspect the connecting rod and connecting rod cap for the proper identification mark. The connecting rod and the connecting rod cap should have an etched number on the side. The number should match the cylinder number. Mark the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap, if necessary.
Remove bolts (1) and connecting rod cap (2) from the crankshaft.
Push the connecting rod away from the crankshaft and remove the upper half of the connecting rod bearing.

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Check the clearance of the bearings. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bearing Clearance - Check" for the correct procedure.
Place clean engine oil on the connecting rod bearings.
Illustration 3 g01064420
Install lower half (3) of the connecting rod bearing in connecting rod cap (2). Ensure that the tab on the back of the bearing is in the bearing tab groove on the connecting rod cap.
Install the upper half of the connecting rod bearing in the connecting rod. Ensure that the tab on the back of the bearing is in the bearing tab groove on the connecting rod.
Position the connecting rod on the crankshaft.
Illustration 4 g01064418
Position connecting rod cap (2) onto the connecting rod. Ensure that the number on the side of connecting rod cap (2) corresponds to the number that is on the connecting rod.
Apply Tooling (B) to the threads, the shank, and the seat of bolts (1). Install bolts (1).

(5) Location pinNote: Paint or mark the bolt heads and the connecting rod to ensure the correct angle on the additional 90 degree final turn.
Tighten Bolts (X1) and (X3) to 90 5 N m (65 4 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts (X2) and (X4) to 90 5 N m (65 4 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts (X2) and (X4) again to 90 5 N m (65 4 lb ft).
Paint or mark the bolt head and the connecting rod before final torque turn.
Tighten all the bolts for an extra 90 5 degrees (1/4 turn).
Check the side clearance that is between two of the connecting rods that are on the same journal. The clearance must be 0.85 0.332 mm (0.034 0.0130 inch).End By:a. Install the piston cooling jets.
