Do not smoke when an inspection of battery electrolyte level is made. Batteries give off flammable fumes. Do not let electrolyte solution make contact with skin or eyes. Electrolyte solution is an acid. Connect ground cable last, and remove first, to prevent sparks near the battery, which can cause battery vapors to burn fast with much expansion and force (explode).
Cab is tilted for photo purposes only. 1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) cable assembly (4) and positive (+) cable assembly (1). Remove cable (3) which connects the batteries. 2. Remove nuts (2), bolts and washers which fasten battery hold down assemblies (5) to the tractor.3. Remove battery hold down assemblies (5). For D5B and D6D tractors, go to Step 5.4. Remove the four batteries from the D4E. Each battery weight is 45 lb. (20 kg).5. Loosen two bolts (6) and move plate (7) down. 6. Put lift truck in position as shown. Pull battery (8) on to the lift truck forks and remove it. Each battery weight is 100 lb. (45 kg).Install Batteries

For D5B and D6D tractors, go to Step 2.1. Install four 6 volt batteries in the battery compartment. Each battery weight is 45 lb. (20 kg). 2. Lift battery (1) into position with lift truck as shown. Push battery into position in the battery compartment. The battery weight is 100 lb. (45kg). 3. Lift plate (4) and tighten two bolts (3). Put battery hold down assemblies (2) in position on batteries. 4. Install nuts (6), bolts and lockwashers which fasten battery hold down assemblies (2) to the tractor.5. Install cable (7) which connects the batteries. Connect positive (+) cable assembly (5) and negative (-) cable assembly (8) to the correct battery terminals.
