Introduction
This Special Instruction is intended to give information on installing the flip lock packing nut retention device for certain well stimulation pumps.Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.Note: This retainer is only intended to be used with Cat® Two-Piece Stay Rods.Safety Section
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove the fluid end from the power end.

Install one collar (2) on to the stay rod sleeve.

Install one locking arm (3) on to the stay rod sleeve.

Install the second collar (2) on to the stay rod sleeve.
Reinstall the fluid end on the power end before proceeding with the remainder of the flip lock installation.

Remove setscrew (1) from collar (2) closest to the fluid end.
Apply Loctite 243® to the threads of setscrew (1) and reinstall the setscrew without tightening.

Ensure that there is a slight gap between collar (2) and locking arm (3) for ease of operation.
Repeat Steps 6 and 8, this time with the other collar that is closest to the power end.

Rotate both collars (2) until setscrews (1) are 45 degrees off center, from vertical.
Tighten setscrews (1).Torque setscrews ... 14 N m (10 lb ft)
Ensure that the locking arm can flip out of the way unobstructed.Note: If the flip lock does not fall into a tool hole of the packing, DO NOT loosen the packing nut to make the flip lock engage. If the packing starts to back out, the locking arm will fall into place.Note: Flip Locks do not need to be installed on every packing nut of a complete pump, the flip lock may be used on a single packing nut of a pump.
