Information:
Alarms and shutoffs are one of the three following types:
Switches
Transducers
Differential pressure sensorsAlarms
Engines may be equipped with alarms that are used to alert the operator when undesirable operating conditions occur.
When an alarm is activated, corrective measures must be taken before the situation becomes an emergency in order to avoid possible engine damage.
The alarm will remain active until the condition is corrected.Shutoffs
Always determine the cause of the engine shutdown. Make necessary repairs before attempting to restart the engine.
Shutoffs are set at critical levels for the following conditions:
Coolant temperature
Oil pressure
OverspeedBefore restarting the engine, acknowledge the shutoff at the control panel .Make sure that you are familiar with the following items:
Types and locations of shutoff sensors
Conditions that cause each shutoff to function
Resetting procedure for engine restartAir Shutoff
The mechanical air shutoff is an optional component located in the air inlet system. The air shutoff uses a plate that rotates on a shaft to shut off inlet air. The air shutoff plate is rotated to the closed position by an actuator or manually. The engine stops because of the restricted air supply.Note: Determine the cause for the engine shutdown prior to restarting the engine.

During testing, abnormal operating conditions must be simulated. Perform the tests correctly in order to help prevent possible engine damage.
Emergency stop and/or air inlet shutoff testing must be performed at 0% (minimum possible) engine load. Actuating air inlet shutoffs on a loaded engine will cause accelerated turbocharger wear. If an emergency stop is performed on an engine while operating at greater than 30% load, disassemble and inspect the turbocharger thrust bearings before returning the engine to service. For more information, refer to the Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8018.
Refer to the System Operation, Testing and Adjusting Manual for more information on testing procedures, or consult your Cat dealer.
