CYLINDER BLOCK AND COVERS 5S9042 - Caterpillar

1. Remove the cotter pin, nut (1), the washer and disconnect linkage (2) from the lever. 2. Remove wire (5), bolt (4), the washer, lever (3) and the key from the shaft. 3. Remove the bolts, clamp (6) and the spacer from the steering column. 4. Remove steering column (7) from machine. The steering column is threaded into the stop below the cab floor. 5. Remove bolts (9) and stop (8) from the machine.Install Steering Column
1. Put stop (1) in position on the bottom of the cab floor and install the bolts that hold it. 2. Install steering column (2) into the stop. 3. Install the spacer, clamp (3) and the bolt that hold the steering column to the cab. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 7 1 N m (5 1 lb.ft.). 4. Install key (4) in the shaft. Make sure bolt (6) is installed in lever (5) before the lever is installed on the shaft.5. Install lever (5) on the shaft and install the washer, the bolt and the wire that hold the lever in place. 6. Connect linkage (8) to the lever with the washer, nut (7) and cotter pin.Disassemble Steering Column
START BY:a) remove steering column 1. Remove screws (2), cover (1) and the spacers from the wheel. 2. Loosen nut (3) that holds the wheel to the shaft. 3. Fasten tooling (A) on wheel (4) and remove the wheel from the shaft. 4. Remove nut (5) from column assembly (6).5. Remove shaft (9) from column assembly (6).6. Use tool (B) and remove nut (8) from shaft (9).7. Remove bearing (7) from shaft (9). 8. Remove seal (10) from nut (5). 9. Remove bearing (11) from the column assembly (6).Assemble Steering Column
1. Use tool group (A) and install bearing (2) even with the outside surface of column assembly (1). 2. Use tool group (A) and install seal (4) in nut (3) with the lip of the seal down as shown.3. Put clean 5P0960 Multipurpose Type Grease in the space below seal (4). 4. Install bearing (7) on shaft (5).5. Use tool (B) and install nut (6) that holds bearing (7) in place on shaft (5).6. Install shaft (5) in column assembly (1).7. Install nut (3) on column assembly (1). 8. Put wheel (8) in position on the shaft and install nut (9) that holds it.9. After nut (9) has been installed, put 2P0296 Thread Lubricant on the threads of the shaft and in the space around it. 10. Install the spacers, cover (10) and screws (11) on the wheel.END BY:a) install steering column
