Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Routine purging of the service brake lines ensures that the system is free of air. Purge the brake groups for the center axle and purge the brake groups for the front axle.Slack Adjusters
Note: Purging air from the slack adjusters only refers to machines with the following serial numbers: AXM1-1182 and AWR1-588
Ensure that the parking brake control is in the ENGAGED position and that the transmission control is in the NEUTRAL position. Block the front of the machine.
Start the engine and raise the body enough to allow the body prop to be raised. Raise the body prop.
Move the hoist control to the FLOAT position and allow the body to lower until the body is supported by the body prop.
Shut off the engine.

Slack adjuster (1) for the center axle is located behind the parking brake.
Clamp a clear plastic tube to purge screw (2) on slack adjuster (1) on the center axle. Fix the free end of the plastic tube into a suitable container.
Start the engine and operate at low idle.
Open purge screw (2). With assistance from another person, press the service brake pedal lightly until oil discharges from the tube. This action will connect the lines from the accumulator to the brake lines.
Close purge screw (2) and release the service brake pedal.

The slack adjuster for the front axle is located behind the front axle housing.
Repeat the procedure for the slack adjuster for the front axle.
Shut off the engine.Brake Groups
Ensure that the parking brake control is in the ENGAGED position and that the transmission control is in the NEUTRAL position.

The guard for the brake line has been removed.
Remove three bolts on the guard and remove the guard.
Clamp a clear plastic tube to purge screw (3) on either brake group. Fix the free end of the plastic tube into a suitable container.
Start the engine and operate at low idle.
Open purge screw (3). With assistance from another person, press the service brake pedal lightly until oil discharges from the tube.
Close purge screw (3) and release the service brake pedal.
Shut off the engine.
Reinstall the guard for the brake line.
Repeat the procedure for the other three brake groups.
Check the brake oil level. If necessary, add oil. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hoist System and Brake System Oil Level - Check" for additional information.
