6. With the 286-4136 U-Channel removed, grind the inboard vertical plate smooth, removing the leftover piece of U-Channel.

7. It is now possible to fully access the L1 and L2 welds. Grind out the existing welds in these locations, as well as the L3 weld behind the vertical plate. Grind these welds, undercutting a 6 mm deep bevel groove in the vertical plate at L1 and L2.

8. Replace the weld that was ground out, referring to the below diagram:

Note: For detailed weld repair instructions, refer to the Welding Requirements and Preparing the Metal for Welding sections.
9. For L1, L2, reweld the joint with a first pass to fill the bevel groove.
10. Reweld a second pass for L1 and L2, adding an 8 mm fillet weld, continuing around the front of the vertical plate to one pass for L3, without stopping.

11. Measure the opening for the already removed U-Channel, and cut a section of new 286-4136 U-channel to replace the removed section. Be sure to make all cuts straight and clean, so the new U-Channel will fit in the space with minimal gap.
12. Referring to the diagram below, prepare a 45 degree chamfer on one end of the new 286-4136 U-channel.

13. Fabricate two back-up strips, referring to the diagram below, using a leftover piece of the 286-4136 U-Channel.

14. Spot weld in the two back-up strips on the bottom of the U-Channel at the outboard joint.
15. Spot weld to hold the new section of 286-4136 U-Channel in place on both ends of the channel.

16. Weld an 8 mm fillet weld on the inboard side of the U-channel.

17. Weld an 8 mm bevel groove weld around the U-Channel butt joint, at the outboard end of the U-channel.

18. Grind this weld smooth, and reweld the previously removed machine ID plate, and chain links, to the new U-Channel.
19. Finish paint the repaired area, referencing the Painting and Coating the structure parts section.

20. Reinstall all removed hardware.
