Remove & Install Turbocharger
FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Disconnect four lines (1) from turbocharger (2). Cap and plug all openings immediately. 2. Install Tool (A) as shown. Attach a lifting sling and a suitable lifting device to the turbocharger as shown.3. Remove two bolts (3) at oil supply line flange (4).4. Remove two bolts and washers (6) at oil drain line flange (5).5. Remove oil drain line (7) and the O-ring seal. 6. Disconnect fitting (9) at the bottom of oil drain line (8). 7. Remove four bolts and washers (10).8. Remove air supply elbow assembly (11) from aftercooler (12) and turbocharger compressor housing (13). Remove the gasket and the O-ring seal from air supply elbow assembly (11).9. Remove four nuts (14). Upon installation apply 4C-5599 Anti-Seize Compoundto the threads of nuts (14) and tighten nuts (14) to a torque of 55 5 N m (41 4 lb ft).10. Remove bolt and washer (17) holding clip (16) and oil supply line (15). Position oil supply line (15) out of the way.11. Carefully lift the turbocharger off the rear exhaust manifold. The weight of the turbocharger is approximately 47 kg (104 lb). Remove turbocharger gasket (18). For installation of the turbocharger, reverse the removal steps.Disassemble & Assemble Turbocharger
Start By:a. remove turbocharger Put a mark on the turbocharger turbine housing and the turbocharger compressor housing in relation to the turbocharger cartridge for assembly purposes. 1. Loosen clamp (1). Upon assembly tighten clamp (2) to a torque of 14 1 N m (10 1 lb ft). Tap the clamp lightly all around and tighten the clamp again to a torque of 14 1 N m (10 1 lb ft).2. Remove turbocharger compressor housing (2) from turbocharger cartridge assembly (3). 3. Straighten eight lock tabs (4).4. Remove eight bolts (5). Upon assembly apply 4C-5599 Anti-Seize Compoundto bolts (5).5. Remove turbocharger cartridge assembly (3) from turbocharger turbine housing (6). The turbocharger is serviceable at the turbocharger cartridge level only, or replacement of the complete turbocharger. Internal parts are not serviced. For assembly of the turbocharger, reverse the disassembly steps.End By:a. install turbocharger
