Problem
Inadequate fusion of welds on R3.9 (873706), R2.9 (873714), and R2.5 (873708) Stick Cylinder ear tails need to be inspected and repaired on certain 320, 320L and 320LN Excavators.
Affected Product
Model & Identification Number
320 (4ZJ1-521)
320L (3XK1-1360)
320LN (9WG1-989
Parts Needed
Fabricate plates as needed.
Action Required
Inspect the stick for identification. The suspect sticks can be identified either by the one pass only weld between the stick bottom plate and the side plate, or by a "CC" marking at the stick nose. See Illustration 1.
See rework procedure if welds are suspect.
Service Claim Allowances
This is a 12 hour job.
Parts Disposition
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
Attach. (1-Rework Procedure)Rework Procedure
1. Locate the area to be reworked (Illustration 2).2. Remove the bucket cylinder and reinstall the pin in the bores. Protect the pin surface from both weld and arc gouging spatter.3. To prevent bracket deformation during welding, tack weld (3) tie bars between the brackets (Illustration 3).4. Remove the welds by arc gouging (Illustration 4). Gouge completely at the tail weld. Gouge the side welds from A to B (approximately 110 mm) on both sides.5. Prepare the bevel carefully by grinding.6. Heat both the front and side area of the plates to 450 C (Illustration 5).7. Welding sequence:a. Alternate welding between the 2 side plates to minimize deformation. b. Tail weld should be a 10 X 30 mm filet with 1.5 mm penetration at bracket ends, layer 1 and 2. Remove slag after each weld pass. See Illustration 7.c. Grind any excessive weld. See Illustration 8.d. Side weld should be a 10 X 10 mm filet with 1.5 mm penetration at each bracket side, layers 1 and 2, from B to A. Remove slag after each pass. See Illustration 6 and 9. e. Transverse weld layer 3 (Illustration 9). Weld over layer 1 from point 1 to point 2. Remove the slag.f. Tail weld finishing (Illustration 10).g. Third side weld layer from B to A. Remove the slag.h. Grind tail welds to have a smooth joint.8. When all the welds are down at atmospheric temperature, remove the tie bars.Weld Specifications
