3408 and 3412 Industrial and Marine EnginesSUPPLEMENT: 10/16/78SERVICE MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 4, 1978, PAGE 6.In the article "Correct Procedure To Adjust Front Power Takeoff Clutches", put marks through "3408 Engine" and "3412 Engine" in the chart. It is possible to install any one of these six clutches on either 3408 or 3412 Engines. For this reason, when any of these clutches need adjustment, be sure to use the specific force and distance (X) shown for that clutch according to the part number.
--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------The procedure that follows must be used to adjust the front power takeoff clutches shown in the chart when used with the above engines. The correct adjustment will prevent clutch slippage and will extend the service life of the clutch.
Adjustment Procedure:
1. Disconnect any linkage from the clutch lever (if so equipped).2. Measure distance (X) as shown in the chart. Distance (X) is the dimension from the center of the lever shaft to a location on the clutch lever where a spring scale will be fastened to measure the amount of force needed to engage the clutch. Fasten a spring scale at the correct location on the clutch lever. See the chart. 3. Keep the angle between the clutch lever and the spring scale at 90°. Pull on the spring scale in the direction shown until the clutch engages. Make a record of the amount of force needed to engage the clutch. Check the chart for the correct amount of force needed to engage the specific clutch.4. If the amount of force needed to engage the clutch is not correct, remove inspection cover (1). Turn the clutch until lock pin (2) can be seen through the inspection opening. Release the push-type lock pin (2) and turn adjustment ring (3) clockwise as seen from the rear of the clutch to increase the force needed or counterclockwise to decrease the force needed to engage the clutch.5. Check the amount of force needed to engage the clutch again. Adjust the adjustment ring until the force is correct.6. The initial adjustment must be checked frequently to prevent slippage during the break-in period until the clutch disc has a good seat. 7. The new adjustment specifications take the place of the former specifications that are on the clutch identification plates and those given in the Service Manual. If the specification that is on the clutch identification plate is different from the new specification, put the new specification on the identification plate in place of the former specification.
