The final drive units are located at each drive wheel. The front and rear final drives are similar in both design and function.The final drive units are single-speed, planetary-type gear reduction drives. The reduction ratio is 111.5:1. The units transfer power from the propel motor (1) directly to drive wheel studs (6). The planetary gear drive train increases the torque through the system. The front final drives have a maximum torque output of 50710 Nm (37,402 lb ft). The rear final drives have a maximum torque output of 38033 Nm (28,052 lb ft).The final drive is a three-stage reducer that contains three planetary gear trains. Spindle (12) and hub (13) are sealed with a set of Duo Cone seals (4). The hub rolls on large, double-row, ball bearings (5) that connect the hub and the spindle. The internal components of the planetary reducer are splash lubricated. The final drive units are self-contained. An oil fill port and oil drain port (9) are located on the face of hub cap (19). The front drive unit has an oil capacity of 8.4 L (2.2 US gal). The rear drive unit has an oil capacity of 5.9 L (1.6 US gal). Spindle (12) is bolted to the machine frame structure. Propel motor (1) is bolted to the spindle. Motor output shaft (2) is splined to coupler (3). The coupler is also splined to the shaft of primary sun gear (21) .As coupler (3) turns in the direction of propel motor (1), primary planetary gears (22) rotate in the opposite direction. The primary planetary gears drive primary planetary carrier (21) in the direction of the motor rotation, at a reduced speed.Primary planetary carrier (21) is splined to the end of intermediate sun gear (18). Intermediate planetary gears (16) are driven by the intermediate sun gear. The intermediate planetary gears rotate in the opposite direction of the motor rotation. The intermediate planetary gears drive intermediate planetary carrier (17) in the direction of motor rotation, at a second reduction of speed.Intermediate planetary carrier (17) is splined to the end of final sun gear (8). Final planetary gears (7) are driven by the final sun gear. The final planetary gears rotate in the opposite direction of the motor rotation. Since the final planetary gears are installed on the spindle, these gears remain in a stationary location. As a result, the final planetary gears drive outer hub (13) at a third and final speed reduction. The
