Arrangement of Power Train Components (1) Differential (front axle) (2) Final drive (front axle) (3) Transmission (4) Control valve (5) Drive shaft (transmission output) (6) Engine (7) Drive shaft (rear axle) (8) Final drive (rear axle) (9) Differential (rear axle) (10) Transfer gears (11) Torque converter (12) Drive shaft (front axle)Torque converter (11) transfers power from engine (6) to the four-speed transmission (3). During operation, drive shaft (5) transmits power from the transmission to transfer gears (10). From the transfer gears, power is directed to differentials (9) and (1) via drive shafts (7) and (12). The differentials transfer power to final drives (2) for the front axle and to final drives (8) for the rear axle. The torque converter and the transmission are bolted as a unit to the flywheel housing on the engine and the transfer gears are mounted on the subframe of the machine. The front axle and the rear axle are equipped with differentials and final drives. The final drives have planetary gears. The primary reduction is provided by a ring gear and a pinion (bevel gear set) at each of the differentials. The secondary reduction is provided by the planetary gears in the final drive. The torque converter and the transmission have a common hydraulic system for operation, for lubrication, and for cooling. The transmission case serves as the oil reservoir. Oil flow around the system is provided by a pump that is mounted on a spacer plate which is located between the transmission and the torque converter housing. The transmission has spur gears that are in constant mesh on all shafts in order to provide a range of four forward speeds and three reverse speeds. The speed range and the direction (forward and reverse) are selected when the clutches lock specific gears to the shafts. The clutches are engaged by oil pressure which is controlled by solenoids that operate the valve spools in control valve (4). The solenoids are operated by the transmission control which is mounted on the left side of the steering column.
