Schematic of the Engine Speed Dial SwitchThis diagnostic code is recorded if the ECM is unable to communicate with the engine speed dial switch.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The solenoid has failed in the high pressure position.
The machine harness has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Test Step 1. FIRST CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC CODE CID 0586 FMI 05
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Check for an active diagnostic code of CID 586 FMI 05.Expected Result:There is no diagnostic code of CID 586 FMI 05.Results:
OK - There is no diagnostic code of CID 586 FMI 05. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is an active diagnostic code of CID 586 FMI 05.Repair: Exit this procedure. Then, perform the procedure for the diagnostic code of CID 586 FMI 05. Stop.Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.
Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Inspect the harness connections. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.
Check the mating of the harness connectors.
Check wires at the connector.
Check each wire for nicks or signs of abrasion in the insulation.
Check for moisture at the connector.
Check for dirty contacts or corroded contacts.
Check each pin and each socket. Expected Result:The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Results:
OK - The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The machine harness connectors are NOT tight and free of corrosion. Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. Stop.Test Step 3. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.
The ECM and the engine speed dial switch remain disconnected from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance between frame ground and the following connector contacts: J1-38 (wire A755-PK), J1-39 (wire A756-BU), J1-28 (wire A757-GY) and J1-29 (wire A758-BR).Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance of the circuits are correct. Proceed to test step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The resistance of the circuit is not correct.Repair: There is a short between frame ground and the "circuits that have less than 5000 ohms of resistance" in the machine harness. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. Stop.Test Step 4. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS
Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors and clean the contacts.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the disconnect switch (if equipped) and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the display for an active diagnostic code of CID 0586 FMI 12.Expected Result:The diagnostic code of CID 0586 FMI 12 is not active.Results:
OK - The diagnostic code of CID 0586 FMI 12 is not active. The failure is no longer present. Repair: The diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connections that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine
