Component Code 1050SUBJECT: INTERIM CLAMPING STRATEGY FOR AIR INLET HOSES
PROBLEM:
Joint integrity at 4P-5212 Hoses used in the air induction system of 789, 789B and 789C Off-Highway Trucks is a field complaint at some sites around the world. Four 4P-5212 Hoses are used in the 789B and 789C air induction system. Two 4P-5212 Hoses are used in the 789 air induction system. Currently each joint is clamped with a single 141-7152 Clamp Assembly. Some sites indicate that although this joint seals at the time of assembly, the joint fails to seal after several hundred hours of operation.

SOLUTION:
Replace each existing clamp assembly with two 3E-7424 Clamp Assemblies. The 3E-7424 Clamp Assembly is a constant torque design, which provides continuous clamping pressure, as the hose takes set.

Remove existing 141-7152 Clamp Assembly (789B and 789C) or 5P-4869 Clamp Assembly (789) from 4P-5212 Hose joints.
Install two 3E-7424 Clamp Assemblies at each joint (double clamp).
Clamp tighteners should be staggered. Clamp bands should be separated slightly from sealing bead of tube and from each other (where possible).
Carefully position the clamps and tightened to avoid twisting the clamp band.
Tighten the clamps to a torque of 11 ± 1 N×m (97 ± 9 lb×in). Do not over tighten or under tighten. Use proper torque tool.
Following assembly, check air induction system for leaks. Refer to Service Magazine article, Procedure to Test the Air Induction System, SEPD0635-00.
