Components of the Front Drive and Steering Axle (1) Right side gear. (2) Right axle shaft. (3) Differential. (4) Pin. (5) Flange. (6) Pinion gear. (7) Differential ring gear. (8) Left side gear. (9) Left axle shaft. (10) Clutch packs. (11) Pinions.Power from the transmission output shaft is transferred to the front axle by the drive shaft and universal joints. The power enters the front axle through the flange (5). The flange (5) is attached to the pinion gear (6). The pinion gear (6) rotates in the axle with two opposing tapered roller bearings. Power is transferred from the pinion gear (6) to the differential ring gear (7). The differential ring gear (7) is bolted to the differential (3) .Power is transferred through the differential (3) by the pin (4), the pinions (11), the clutch packs (10), the right side gear (1), and the left side gear (8). Refer to Systems Operation, "Differential" for more information about the differential. The right side gear (1) is splined to the right axle shaft (2). The left side gear (8) is splined to the left axle shaft (9). The components to the left and to the right of the differential (3) operate identically.

Components of the Front Drive and Steering Axle (12) Tie rods. (13) Hydraulic steering cylinder. (14) Sun gear and shaft. (15) Carrier. (16) Planetary gears. (17) Ring gear. (18) Flange. (19) Housing. (20) Upper pin. (21) Axle shaft. (22) Universal joint. (23) Lower pin.The power is transferred through the axle shaft (21) and the universal joint (22) to the final drive. The final drive causes the last speed reduction and the last torque increase in the drive train. The final drive consists of the following components: the sun gear (14), the carrier (15), the planetary gears (16), and the ring gear (17). The sun gear (14) is splined to the universal joint (22) and the axle shaft (21). The ring gear (17) is bolted to the housing (19). Three planetary gears (16) are mounted in the carrier (15). The carrier (15) is bolted to the flange (18). The flange (18) rotates on the housing (19) with two opposing tapered roller bearings. The power is transferred through the sun gear (14) to the planetary gears (16). The planetary gears (16) revolve around the inside of the ring gear (17). The movement of the planetary gears (16) around the ring gear (17) causes the carrier (15) and flange (18) to rotate. Power is transferred from the flange (18) to the wheel. The hydraulic steering cylinder (13) is connected to the housings (19) through two adjustable tie rods (12). The housings (19) rotate on the axle with opposing tapered roller bearings in the upper pin (20) and the lower pin (23).
