Schematic of the Left and Right Steer Lever Position SensorsThis diagnostic code is recorded when the power train ECM reads the signal from the sensor wire connection25as being shorted to ground. The position sensor produces a PWM signal. The sensor signal wire contact Cconnects to contact J2-25 of the power train ECM.The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed:
The supply circuit wire from contact 44 on the ECM to the sensor is shorted high.
The signal wire contact J2-25is shorted to ground.
A sensor has failed.
The ECM has failed. ECM failure is unlikely.System Response:Components that receive power from the sensor supply will not be available.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Ensure that the diagnostic code is active.
Observe the status of the diagnostic code. Then, disconnect the sensor from the machine harness.Expected Result:The diagnostic code will remain active if the sensor is not the cause of the diagnostic code. The sensor is the cause of the diagnostic code if the diagnostic code is NO longer active.Results:
OK - The diagnostic code remains active. The sensor is not faulty. The machine harness may have failed or the ECM may have failed. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - The diagnostic code is NO longer active. The machine harness and the ECM are operating properly. Repair: The sensor has failed. Replace the sensor and perform the calibration procedure for the position sensors of the steer lever. See the Testing and Adjusting, RENR8234, "Calibration" procedure in the service manual for your machine. Verify that the new sensor corrected the problem. If the problem persists, exit this procedure and perform this procedure again.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.
The sensor remains disconnected from the machine harness.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the J2 machine harness connector from the ECM.
At the J1 machine harness connector, measure the resistance from contact J2-25 to ground.Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.Repair: ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. See Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms.Repair: The machine harness has failed. There is a short in the machine harness between the signal circuit and ground. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOP
