Remove & Install Timing Gears & Housing Plate
Start By:a. remove timing gear coverb. remove fuel injection pump housing and governor Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Remove four bolts (2), plate (3) and idler gear (1). If the camshaft assembly is to be removed, the valve lifters must first be removed. See the topic "Remove Valve Lifters" in this module. Turn the engine to top center (TC) compression stroke for the No. 1 piston. 2. Remove two bolts (4) plate (5) and camshaft assembly (6).
Do not pull the camshaft gear from the camshaft. Inspect each tooth of the camshaft drive gear for visible cracks and chipping (spalling). Replace the entire camshaft assembly if necessary.
Do not turn the crankshaft with the camshaft removed. Damage can be caused to the pistons and valves, or both.
3. Remove three nuts (7), plate (8) and idler gear (9). 4. Remove bolts (10) that hold timing gear plate (11) to the cylinder block.5. Remove timing gear plate (11). 6. Use Tool (B) to remove the bearing from the idler gear. The following steps are for the installation of the timing gears and plate.7. Install a new gasket on the timing gear plate.8. Put timing gear plate (11) in position on the cylinder block, and install the bolts that hold the timing gear plate to the cylinder block.9. Install idler gear (9) plate (8) and three nuts (7). If the camshaft assembly was removed, the valve lifters must be installed. See the topic "Install Valve Lifters" in this module.10. Install camshaft assembly (6) and secure with plate (5) and two bolts (4).11. Use Tool (B), and install the bearing in idler gear (1). Set the gear on the front face, (face with timing marks). Drive the bearing from the rear face toward the front face of the gear. Install the bearing to a depth of 1.5 0.5 mm (.06 .02 in)below the rear face of the idler gear.11. Install idler gear (1), plate (3) and bolts (2). Be sure No. 1 cylinder is at top center on the compression stroke. Install the idler gear so "V" mark (12) on the idler gear is in alignment with the "V" mark on the crankshaft gear.
