Starting Above 0°C (32 °F)
Key must be in run position with engine running to maintain electrical and hydraulic functions and prevent serious machine damage.If the engine does not start, return the key to OFF before returning it to START.Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for 2 minutes before cranking again.
1. Insert the key into the disconnect switch located in the battery box and turn the switch to ON position. 2. This machine is equipped with the Engine Neutral Start System to prevent any uncontrolled operations of the hydraulic system. The system allows engine startings only when the hydraulic activation control lever is in the LOCKED position. Move the hydraulic activation control lever back to the locked position.3. Move the hydraulic controls to the HOLD position. 4. Move the governor control lever to the medium speed position.5. Turn the engine key start switch to the START position.6. Release the key switch after the engine starts.7. Return the governor control lever to idling position to warm up the engine.Starting Below 0 °C (32 °F) (If Equipped with Ether Starting Aid)
Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine.Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.Use ether for cold starting purposes only.After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow 2 minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.
1. Repeat steps 1 thru 4 in "Starting Above 0°C (32 °F)." 2. Turn the start key switch to start the engine.3. Push the starting aid (ether) knob and release.4. Operate the start aid switch every two seconds while cranking the engine. Continue use until the engine starts and is running smoothly.5. Release the key switch when engine starts. Ether start container is located in the engine compartment. See "Ether Starting Aid Cylinder" in the "Maintenance Section" for container information.For starting below - 18 °C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required.At temperature below - 23 °C (- 10 °F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Cold Weather Operation, and Maintenance Guide," Form SEBU 5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting with Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump cables.Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump only with a battery source and with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.
