Power Shift Transmissions Equipped With Nonmetallic Clutch DiscsPremature wear and/or failure can occur if nonmetallic clutch discs are not cleaned correctly. The material used to make these discs is porous and requires certain precautions to prevent damage to the friction material.
Most common petroleum or chlorinated cleaning solvents can be used to clean nonmetallic clutch discs, provided certain procedures are followed.
... Do not use any solvent heated above 65° C (150° F).... Minimize the time the solvent remains in contact with the disc.... Use towels or compressed air to dry the discs as soon as possible after cleaning.... Do not stack discs on top of each other after cleaning.Certain types of cleaning/solvent products can damage the friction material and should not be used near, or allowed to come in contact with, nonmetallic clutch discs. Do not use water or water based cleaning solvents, such as Hydrosolv liquid akaline cleaners, steam, Freon, paint thinner, ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or aldehydes such as acetone, to clean clutch discs. These materials can weaken the base material and allow the friction material to be stripped from the disc during operation.
