These wet brakes are engaged through the compression of a series of disks and plates. Disks (6) are splined to output shaft (5). Plates (8) are splined to brake housing (7). The flushing system directs oil through the brake housing in order to cool and clean the internal components. Charge pressure is used to release the parking brakes. When the brakes are engaged, passage for charge pressure (9) in the brake housing is open to the hydraulic tank. Brake springs (2) move brake piston (3) against brake disks and plates (7). This action compresses disks (6) and plates (8), so output shaft (5) cannot rotate.When the brakes are released, charge pressure is directed into the piston cavity. Charge pressure acts against brake piston (3), in opposition to brake springs (2). The charge pressure overcomes the spring force, and the brake piston moves. This movement releases the compressive force on disks (6) and plates (8).
