Place the shear in a horizontal position. Open the jaws of the shear.
Lock the jaws in an open position. The following procedures describe maintaining the jaws in the open position.
Illustration 2 g02174182
Lock for the hydraulic cylinder on the VHS-60/4 and VHS-70/4 shears
In order to hold the shear in the open position for the VHS-60/4 and VHS-70/4, insert shear lock (1) through the hole on the side of the shear. Slide the pipe on the shear lock (1) all the way through the shear. Insert bolt (2) into the hole in the end of the pipe. Install nut (3) onto the bolt. Refer to Table 1 for the part numbers of the shear locks.

Inspect all wear plates (L) for excessive wear or damage. If the wear plates (L) have excessive wear or damage, wear plates (L) must be replaced.Note: New wear plates contain cracks, due to the hardness of the material. Cracks on new wear plates are not caused from wear or damage.Replace the Wear Plates
Clean the shear.

Grind the existing wear plates (L) in order to remove the wear plates. The existing wear plates (L) can only be removed by grinding off the wear plates.
Grind the surface of the end plate (Z). The surface should be clean and free of rust.
Remove the paint from the end plate (Z).

Typical example for locations of wear plates
Tack weld the new wear plates (L) to the end plate (Z) of the housing (Y). Check for proper positioning. Refer to table 2 and illustration 6 for dimensions and part numbers of the wear plates.
Preheat the surface of the end plate (Z) to 150 °C (302 °F) to 200 °C (392 °F).
In order to weld the wear plate (L), use welding material AWS A5.28-96: ER100S-G.
