Component Code: 1000SUBJECT: Interim Fix for Thick White Smoke on 315C Excavators
PROBLEM: Throttle positions 4 through 8 will start to create thick white smoke when the engine idles with no load. This occurs more frequently when the ambient temperature is 0 ?C (32 ?F) and when the coolant temperature is at normal operating temperature of 54 ?C (130 ?F). At the 54 ?C (130 ?F) the air inlet heater is deactivated as per design.
SOLUTION:
Perform the following steps in order to minimize the white smoke at throttle positions 4 through 8:
1. Check, adjust if necessary, the static injection timing. The static injection timing should be 8?. The static injection timing for the engine is listed in the information decal on the valve cover.
2. Replace 193-3496 Controller for the air inlet heater with 197-4330 Air Controller (HEATER).
3. Inform the operators to energize the Automatic Engine Control (AEC) when operating the excavator.
4. If you detect that the engine is surging, turn the idle sub spring clockwise (in) 90 degrees (1/4 turn). This should stop the surging.
This is an interim fix until the new timing advance is available.
