Bearing Preload Adjuster Attached To Wheel Assembly.
Release the parking brake and rotate the wheel at least three revolutions to allow the wheel bearing to seat properly.
Record the readings from each digital indicator and averagethese readings to calculate the correct shim pack thickness.
Loosen and remove the five bolts. Use the same one-quarterturn and alternating diagonal pattern when loosening thebolts. Do not use an impact wrench to remove the bolts.
Using an overhead lifting device, remove the tool from thewheel assembly.
Clean the surface of the outer contact ring and base plate.Place the bearing preload adjuster tool onto the base plate and tightenthe five bolts, finger tight.
Install the shim pack, retainer, and bolts on the wheelassembly. Tighten the bolts per Caterpillar specifications. The bearingpreload procedure is now complete.Indicator Accuracy Check
To check the indicators for accuracy:
Remove five 3/4-10 bolts (2) from the bearingpreload adjuster and separate it from the base plate (6).Thoroughly clean bolts and spherical washers (2) andall mating surfaces of outer contact ring (5) andthe base plate. (Refer to Illustration 3).Note: Check for any burrs, nicks, or raised surfaces which exceed 0.025 mm (.0010 inch) onor above the surface of both the outer contact ring and base plate.Remove any raised surfaces using a file or stone. Raised surfaceswill affect the accuracy of this tool and the preload adjustment tothe wheel bearing.
Lubricate the 3/4-10 bolt threads with machine oil or anti-seizelubricant. Attach the bearing preload adjuster to base plate usingthe five bolts and spherical washers.
Tighten bolts (2) to 339N m (250.0 lb ft) usingan alternating diagonal pattern with no more than one-quarterturn at a time. The alternating tightening pattern ensuresthat the adjuster is tightened evenly onto the base plate. Do notuse an impact wrench to tighten the bolts.
Select the units of measure (millimeter or inch) on theindicators. Set the two digital indicators to zero by pressing the "zero button" on each indicator.

Remove calibration shims (7) from the baseplate by removing two bolts (8) holding the calibrationshims in place. Position calibration shims (7), equallyspaced, under outer contact ring (5), as shown inIllustration 6.
Make sure that the calibration shims are not underneath, ormaking contact with inner spacer (10). If the calibrationshims are under the contact ring when the bearing preload adjusteris tightened onto the base plate, damage to the contact ring or baseplate will occur.

Each indicator reading should be 3.175 0.051 mm (0.1250 0.0020 inch). If the indicators do not show this reading:
